About Me

So You Want To Be A Vet? There will always be a need for vets. That idea, plus my huge love of animals, has led me down the path of becoming a veterinarian. I have not graduated from my course yet, but the reason behind this blog is to share my learning journey. I intend to write blog posts on subjects like the veterinarian education path, my thoughts on whether to be a general or specialist vet and how I wish to use alternative treatments like acupuncture in my practice. If you too have a love of animals and want to make this your job, then my blog will be interesting to you.

3 Signs to Help You Know When the Vet Services Are Inevitable

Pets such as dogs are lovely creatures and reliable companions. They help you get peace of mind and happiness in various ways. Moreover, they help you explore the world around you and discover some new things, especially during dog walking. However, it's sometimes hard for you to know when they have health issues because they can't talk. So, it's advisable to do all you can to keep your dog in perfect health, and getting timely vet services is the most appropriate way to do so. These three signs can help you know that your pet needs the attention of a vet.

The Dog Takes a Lot of Water

If your dog takes more water than it always does, you need to identify the cause behind the change. Taking excess water may indicate a lot of things. Your pet could be dehydrated or might be developing a serious health problem like kidney disease or even diabetes. So if you notice that your dog drinks more water than usual these days, you should seek for vet services immediately. The vet will help find out why your dog is unusually thirsty and how the problem could be treated.

The Dog Is Hyperactive

Most pet owners hardly associate hyperactivity with a medical problem. Some consider it a sign that the pet is over-excited. However, this might not be the case always. Hyperactivity may sometimes indicate the dog has an injury or has developed a medical problem. It's okay for your dog to run around, but if it does it nervously and can't be still, call in a vet to help you find out what the dog could be feeling. The cause of this unusual behaviour could be fever, stomachache or any other health issue. Hyperactivity is one of the ways that most dogs use to express discomfort, pain or any other unusual sensation.

Unusual Bathroom Habits

The bathroom habits of your dog can change due to many things. However, health issues contribute a lot to the way your pet behaves in the bathroom. For instance, if you don't find faeces in the bathroom for several days, just know that something is wrong with your dog.  On the other hand, if the faeces don't look normal, you should contact your vet. The odour, consistency and colour of the faeces and bowel movement can tell a lot about your pet's health. They could indicate that your dog consumed inappropriate food or it has other issues like intestinal parasites, bacteria, viruses, organ problems or even allergies.

As you can see, living with a pet is a huge commitment because you must always ensure they are happy and healthy. However, it can be a challenge because they can't talk to make you know what they are feeling. For this reason, you should be keen to identify when their habits change and also when vet services are inevitable.
